I’m going to try to return this book if I can…I keep forgetting. The recipes are high in fat and are not all that original.
You can do better by just using foods as least processed as possible. Have your kids help you plan menus, shop for ingredients, and prepare the meals. Talk about the Food Guide Pyramid and use the Diabetes Plate Method to develop healthy meals and appropriate portion sizes. Go to http://www.mypyramid.gov for more ideas.
Download fast food and chain menu item nutrients and talk about wise choices before eating out.
Avoid eating/snacking in front of the TV. Make fresh fruit & veggies readily available. Talk about how good food tastes…help kids (and yourself) be mindful about what they’re/you’re eating.
Make a point of getting at least 1 hour of walking/active playing as a family. Limit TV & video games — the time for these could be earned through age-appropriate chores.

I am very disappointed with this book. Recipes are boring and dishes that I’ve seen many times before. If it’s available at your library, check it out there before buying it. It’s not a keeper.

I was very disappointed in this book. A lot of the recipes are high in calories and fat and not at all what I would consider healthy. Zucchini tempura for example (over 300 calories without the sauce they recommend) isn’t a healthy snack yet the authors of this book seem to think it is. Other recipes aren’t recipes at all…grilled cheese made with bread, butter and cheese? Gee, I never would have thought of that. This book was a complete waste of money.

I asked my daughter (6 years old) to help choose a good kids cookbook and she really liked the cover of this one. Once it arrived, she was also very excited about the recipes, which was a relief! We had a ton of fun making a chocolate cake and honey-chocolate frosting. She liked it, although I have to admit it wasn’t your typical chocolate cake, less sweet and more dense. Overall, I think it will be a good intro to healthy and fun cooking.

We saw this cookbook reviewed in our local newspaper. I checked it out from the library to see if my family would like it. I had such success with it that I bought it. I use it almost every day now. My kids and my husband like it. I have made stuff to serve to guests and always get compliments. I like that veggies aren’t hidden in the recipes. Their theory is kids will eat veggies if they are cooked right, so they don’t need to be disguised. We are on a strict budget so some of the recipes call for ingredients that are too expensive, but there are plenty of others that are cost effective. Thumbs up on this one. If I could, I would buy several copies to give away to other moms.
