I am fortunate. You’re right.
This video describes other ways to find vegan food: watch?v=KkmOkk9xx-0
You’re so lucky Elaine. Where I live you can’t find any of those vegan products and no products are labelled as vegan either.
Lactose free is not synonymous with vegan, though. And usually those things will say, “Contributes an insignificant amount of lactose,” which will always mean it’s not vegan. I agree with not abstaining from something for sharing equipment with non-vegan items, right now it’s one of those necessary evils unless you buy from all vegan companies, which would be ideal, but difficult.
I do the same thing! (label, allergen list, and finally ingredients). Big time saver! (:
That particular product contains casein, a dairy product, but not actually lactose. In your case, it would not be safe but for anyone who is not allergic to dairy and is only allergic to lactose, Veggie Slices are a-okay.
For instance, the brand called veggie shreds. On the front it says *Lactose free, but on the back it says contains lactose, and is made on shared equipment. I am ok with the shared equipment thing. They do wash the equipment before making vegan products. But I am not ok with them saying they are “Lactose free” ect, when they contain lactose on the ingredients list. I am vegan by choice. My daughter is severely allergic to dairy ( anaphylaxis) so yes it counts for products not to be misleading.
thanks
A lot of smaller companies can’t afford their own equipment so they buy time on shared equipment. The machines are cleaned between runs but may contain trace amounts of dairy or egg. I think you should support these companies because maybe someday they will be able to afford to use unshared equipment. If you don’t they could go out of business (or get dropped by their parent company) I think if you are trying hard to do your best that is what matters. Not being perfect. Unless you are allergic.
Yeah, that’s how i find many of my foods :] oh yeah, i was wondering; Whats your stance on eating foods(without egg, dairy, meat, honey) that were processed on equipment that also processed like eggs or milk etc? Would you still consider it vegan? (thanx)
I have noticed the Vegan Label more often lately….Private Selection is also a generic brand in the Kroger stores we have here in Ohio..I have even found “Vegan” on the store brand stuff at times.
That’s weird. I’ve never noticed that. I think most food peoples are well informed as to what vegan means, plus to be certified vegan they must be CERTIFIED, in which case the inspectors would definitely know what to look for. Could you give any examples, just so I know lying brands to avoid?
obviously
Elaine, is your suranme French?
Alternatively, buy a copy of the Animal Free Shopper. A must have for all UK vegans. Contains 10,000s of vegan products available in the UK.
It can fit in your pocket so you can take it shopping!
It’s available from The Vegan Society of the United Kingdom.
Okay. This is my method. (For UK vegans)
Is there a Vegan Society sunflower logo? Yes? Then it’s vegan.
Otherwise, check the allergies list. This is usually very short and quick to check for egg, milk and whey. If they’re listed, replace to shelf. Yuk! lol
Then, there’s not much else but to go through the whole list. Obviously, knowledge of what things are is essential here. And E numbers (additives indicated by a 3 digit code) – the only way to do this is using a list. cntd…
Some products say “Vegan” but it still has Casein or whey in the ingredients. Casein and whey protein are both dairy by-products and as such, are vegetarian but are not vegan. I have to read all labels regardless because my daughter in seriously allergic to dairy in all forms.
Just thought I’d mention that tidbit just in case anyone else was not aware.
Love your videos by the way
From my experience they very rarely put the vegan label on vegan items in common grocery stores; only in whole foods or farmers markets. So you end up paying two or three times the price because you’re too lazy to read the ingredients.
P.S. I’ve been vegan for the past few days without realizing it until now.
Wow! Vegan women are sexy. I need a cold shower.
Thanks for all your videos
Ive been a vegetarian for a month now
