what kind of effect does the hydrogen bonding between molecules have on viscosity??
It is kind of new. I was teaching it the other way for over 24 years before I had to change!
Thanks for the encouragement and kind words!

Interesting. Are there very very new IUPAC nomenclature rules out for splitting the name and adding the location of the OH group or has this been the case from the get go? I will have to decide if this will be addressed to the Chemistry Department about this information as I don’t want to “rock the boat” and seem like a smarty pants…twice! Thanks for the correction on the “yl” to “o”. Thanks for posting these videos as well. Great stuff!!
You are correct with the alphabetical order, as I have mentioned in previous posts. But your “chloryl” should be “chloro” and, I’m sorry, but you do split up the pentanol into pentan-3-ol. The comment directly below has the name bang on!
Chemguy
Your naming is not consistant with IUPAC.
ex: it should be, 1-chloryl-3-methyl-3-pentanol
C comes before M and you don’t split up the Pentanol to note it’s location. (Pentan-3-ol)
Agree? Comment?
Yep it has to be alphabetical, so you’re right!
Chemguy
Great video helped loads, just one question don’t you have to write the names in alphabetical order so it would be 1-chloro-3-methyl-propan-3-ol, or can you just ignore that?
Thanks
ohhh cuz my teacher does it the old way:S. alright thanks
Nope. Not at all. Never. You have to do the new system.
Chemguy
is it ok if i was to write: 2-propanol instead of propan-2-ol
incease of 200 C
at like 1:45
loool 3:43, this was explained well thou! 5/5
wonderful but i didnt understand d end

Thanks!

where are you teaching at?
Yes, I think the Chloro has priority in the formula according to the alphabetic rule.
Damn i wish I had such a great chem teacher
This should be 1-Chloro-3-methylpentan-3-ol or 1-Chloro-3-methyl-3-pentanol, I think.
I think he said in one of the earlier videos that it doesn’t have to be named alphabetically and that he prefers to name them in order of complexity
i really appreciate what you are doing chemguy, your videos are great!
Shouldnt it be named alphabetically? 1-chloro first before 3- methyl? Great Video!
would be nice if there were actual concepts other than naming
