What is a good cat food without BHA?
I just learned about the harms of BHA and other chemicals used in pet food to preserve the food. I currently feed my cat 9Lives, as well as a mixture of organic cooked meats when I can, and I looked up 9Lives ingredients and saw that they use BHA. What is a good brand of cat food without those harsh chemicals and where can I buy it?
Sadly, feeding organic dry food is terribly expensive, but my little guy is worth it. Also, I have to drive 2 hours to get to any pet store where they sell cat food, so I buy my pet food from Wal-Mart (yuck). Is there a good brand of cat food at Wal-Mart by chance? If not, I guess I have to drive 2 hours to the pet store. Thank you!

I feed my cat EVO. Quality dry foods really aren’t that much more expensive than bad dry foods. You may want to just order cat food online from PetFoodDirect if you really do live that far from pet stores.

You can order quality food from http://www.petfooddirect.com
You can also use that site to “research” the ingredients in 40 or more cat foods that they carry.
The snag is that you have to pay shipping charges. Even then with gas prices rising so rapidly and the time involved to go and get food you should be better off in the long run.
Quality canned food has a long shelf life so you can have cases (24 or 12) cans around (not in a hot garage) for a long time. Dry foods are also packaged so that they can hang around for a while (several months usually) before you open them.
You can look into Wellness, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, etc. for good foods without chemical preservatives.
I think you are falling for the stories of advocates of specific types of foods, but that’s all right. Neither of the dry kibble I feed my cats have BHA listed (one has potassium sorbate). And of the several varieties of wet food I give as treats (9 Lives), none of them list BHA. So just check the labels, or if you have to drive a bit further, buy more. But the thing to remember, the finest food in the word (in someone’s opinion) will be of no value if your cat will not eat it.
Most likely, the moist and semi-moist foods have the greater likelihood of preservatives, although I have found wet cat food without preservatives listed, and of other brands.
I don’t buy at Wal-Mart, so I cannot comment on their selection.
